On August 22, 2008, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Wen welcomed Brown to the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games and congratulated on British athletes' remarkable performances at the Games. The Chinese premier thanked Britain for its support to the Beijing Olympic Games, expressing China's willingness to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with Britain in the Olympic field. He also expressed his wish that the next Olympic Games in London in 2012 would be successful. "Sharing development opportunities under the new circumstances, China and Britain should work hand in hand to respond to challenges, which is in the fundamental interests of both nations and their peoples and conducive to world peace and development," said Wen. He urged both sides to proceed from a strategic and long-term perspective and earnestly maintain the overall situation of bilateral ties in the spirit of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit. He said China would work together with Britain to keep high-level visits, strengthen strategic dialogues and properly handle differences, in a bid to realize greater progress in bilateral friendly exchanges and reciprocal cooperation in various fields. Brown congratulated Wen for the "wonderful success" of the Beijing Olympic Games and Chinese athletes' outstanding performance. He said Britain would learn from China's successful hosting of the Olympic Games. On bilateral ties, he said the British side attached great importance to the strategic partnership with China and looked forward to developing cooperation with China in extensive areas. Britain is also ready to enhance communication and coordination with China to jointly face the opportunities and challenges brought about by globalization so as to promote the lasting, steady and balanced development of world economy, added Brown. Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern. |
